The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.

History

Some of our engineers are maintainers of the GIMP and make serious contributions to GTK+ as part of developing GIMP. This is due to the nature of the GIMP pushing the limits of the toolkit every day. Historically, the GIMP is where GTK+ spawned from when it was decided a dedicated toolkit was needed for common UI features like buttons and entries. Even today our GIMP developers are using it as a means to test GTK+.

The GIMP is also one of the best open source tools for image manipulation and often compared to Photoshop. To be able to maintain a project like GIMP requires significant knowledge about the graphical pipeline and lower level drawing capabilities of the windowing system all the way up to the basic button used in a dialog. It also requires unique widget creation as you will have witnessed should you use the GIMP.
